In this case we have a company that appears to be taking a socially responsible role; they want to do the right thing. However, any action will have an opportunity
cost. For example, a construction company has one sum of money, they can either use the entire sum to purchase all the safety equipment for the workforce, alternatively they can
use half of the money for safety equipment and give the other half to a worthy charity. Both of these action may be seen as ethical, there is the
use of profits for the benefit of others rather than being used to increase shareholder profits, but there are also trade offs, where the money is used only internally the
charity will not gain the funds and could suffer, but if the funds are split the areas where safety equipment were not purchased may suffer as a result of the
lower internal investment levels. This need to decide will depend on a range of factors and as such the decision may be seen as a defining moment; the choosing
between right and right. There may be several aspects that are considered. Firstly, the impact of the decision may be looked at. If there is a decision to give part
of the investment to a charity then social good may be served, for example, if this is a local childrens football team they may not survive without the donation. However,
there may be a cost associated with this, such as increased risk to the company and potential legal action if safety was not up to the required standard as a
