that some youth sell drugs or steal cars because they believe that crime is a good way to improve ones personal situation (Siegel, 2006). This is a common sense approach
to crime. It suggests that people do things to benefit themselves. In ethical games like Scruples, or mind experiments, people are sometimes asked if they would steal something if they
knew that they would not get caught. Many people say "sure." But then there are also a good number of people who would say no, because it is wrong. That
is not who they are. They would feel guilty. Choice theories focus on mental processes and behavioral patterns (Siegel, 2006). This is true even when choices are not rational
(Siegel, 2006). For example, young people may engage in violent behavior because they have been abused themselves (Siegel, 2006). There are countless stories about individuals who were beat with
a stick as children. Yet, for some reason the choice makes sense for them. Perhaps they were used to being beaten so they beat a younger sibling or a stranger.
They feel it is the right thing to do. It is familiar. It is a choice that leads to results. Yet, benefits are really not obvious in violent scenarios as
it appears that everyone involved loses. The more obvious reasons that crime is committed is due to the immediate gain received. The embezzler gets money as does the murderer who
kills his parents for the insurance stipend. There is immediate gratification there. The individual makes a choice, albeit a poor moral one, and is rewarded. How might a Marxist critique
