not found in nature; it exists there only as the "chloride ion" (Chlorine, 2006). The chloride ion is found in seawater; "about 1.9% of the mass of seawater is
chloride ions" (Chlorine, 2006). Since "most chlorides are soluble in water" solid forms are "usually only found in abundance in dry climates or deep underground" (Chlorine, 2006). Some
of the "common chloride minerals" include sodium chloride and potassium chloride (Chlorine, 2006). The chemical symbol for chlorine is Cl; its atomic number is 17 and its atomic weight is
35.453 (2) g m (Winter, 2003). Carl Wilhelm Scheele discovered chlorine in 1774in Sweden; he obtained it "through the reaction of the mineral pyrolusite (manganese dioxide, MnO2) with hydrochloric acid
(HCl, then known as muriatic acid)" (Winter, 2003). However, it was Sir Humphrey Davy who "confirmed chlorine to be an element in 1810"; he also named it (Winter, 2003).
In its standard state, chlorine is "a greenish yellow gas which combines directly with nearly all elements" (Winter, 2003). It is a "respiratory irritant," meaning that
it irritates the mucous membranes if inhaled; and in a liquid form it burns the skin (Winter, 2003). It has a characteristically strong odor such that as little as
3.5 parts per million can be detected; a concentration of 1000 parts per million "is likely to be fatal after a few deep breaths" (Winter, 2003). It is
this property that led to the use of chlorine gas during World War I (Winter, 2003). The first use of chlorine gas in battle was in April 1915, when
the Germany Army used the gas against the French Army at Ypres (Chlorine gas). At first the French troops thought it was a smokescreen; it was only after they
