the whole of musical theater. The recipient of two Tony Awards for Best Leading Actress as well as five Tony nominations, Rivera is perhaps best known for her role
in West Side Story. But beyond her awards, Rivera brought an energy and exuberance to musical theater that was unmatched in the history of Broadway. Her contributions to
the theater remain topical and important even to this day. Rivera was born in 1933 in Washington D.C., with the name
Dolores Conchita Figueroa del Rivero (Chita Rivera, 2004). Her father was a musician and it was evident from early in her childhood that Rivera would take after her father

of Anita (Biography of Chita Rivera, 2004). From this point forward, Rivera was regarded as a "national treasure" (Chita Rivera, 2004).
