boy who tells the story of a love that slowly develops between two relatively unlikely characters. The following paper examines the notion of eternity through the themes of art, childhood,
memory, tradition and nature seen in Aitmatovs story. Jamila First of all it is perhaps important to establish the focus of eternity when speaking of Aitmatovs story. In
this story there is a sense of timelessness. There is no real indication that the story is taking place in one time frame or another, although there are elements that
seem to speak of a time before true industrialization. Through his focus on things like art, childhood, memory, tradition and nature we are given this sense of timelessness, this sense
of eternity. It is from this perspective of eternity, its timeless quality, that we further examine the various themes in the story. Art The story begins with
a discussion of a painting. This painting, as we find out by the end of the story, is representative of the people we will meet in the story. It is
a painting that allows the narrator to always go back and remember. It is also a painting that allows the narrator, as an adult, the opportunity to communicate with those
people to some extent. In the beginning he states that it is not a very great painting, and while he is not ashamed of it, he hides it when people
from the old days come by. We see how he seems to return to this painting often in his life: "Once again I find myself in front of the
