Journal in January 2011, it was met with near horror by some American mothers. In terms of Western standards of parenting, Chinese practices seem excessively rigid and even cruel.
Chua explains that her daughters are not allowed to do some of the many things Western children are allowed to do. These would include having a sleepover, being in a
school play, watching TV, or playing computer games. What Chinese children must do is get an A in every class except gym and drama and play the piano or the
violin (Chua). Chua reports an incident where her 7-year-old daughter was trying to learn a complicated piano piece that required two hands to play, with each hand playing different rhythms.
She just couldnt get it. Chua worked with her daughter for over a week with great resistance from her child. Chua threatened her with no lunch, no dinner, no
holidays and so on and told her to stop being lazy and cowardly. It led to a disagreement between Chua and her husband. This went oh for a long, long
time and finally the child got it. Chua provides a number of examples that demonstrate the differences. Western parents think they are being strict when they require their children
to practice a musical instrument for 30 minutes or an hour each day but Chua requires her children to practice for three four hours. Chua reports a study
comparing the differences between Chinese parenting and Western parenting. This study found that 70 percent of American mothers said that learning should be fun and that putting too much stress
