Karla Von Huben, April 2010 properly. Introduction Like any totalitarian government (or any government, really), Communist China has to
create the illusion that the system is the best for its people. This means that the government must use some sort of propaganda to convince its citizens that it has
their best interests at heart. This paper compares three types of propaganda: novels, film and posters, and argues that posters are probably the most effective in promoting the Chinese way
of life. Discussion We begin with a look at The Red Detachment of Women, a property that has been filmed both as a straight drama and as a ballet. This
paper discusses the ballet, since it is available on YouTube. YouTube is hardly the best method for watching the production, but at least it gives a viewer a chance to
see almost all of the dance. For those accustomed to seeing ballerinas in tutus and male dancers in tights and ornate jackets that make them look like the prince of
a magic kingdom, this production is a revelation. The dancers wear traditional Chinese garb of tunics and trousers, most of which are designed in a drab gray color, except for
the heroine of the piece who is in vivid red (The Red Detachment of Women). The ballet opens with the girl in red hung up in chains; she is the
