the atrocities of Tiananmen Square in 1989, when the Chinese government opened fire on thousands of Chinese citizens demonstrating for democracy, the main question was: "How soon is China going
to fall apart?" (Hayford, 2007, p. 130). Today the prevalent questions are "How did China get so rich and so organized? and What is Chinas effect on life (in the
rest of the world) going to be in the next couple of decades?" (Hayford, 2007, p. 130). The subtext to these questions addresses Western concerns about the role that China
is taking in world affairs. With a totalitarian, Communist-controlled government, some political theorists, such as John J. Mearsheimer, have stated the belief
that, eventually, nations, led by the US, will unite to contain the influence of China, just as they did during the Cold War to contain Soviet expansionism. Other voices state
the belief that China will pursue its economic goals, without resorting to military strategies. However, which ever course world events take over the coming decades, it is clear that China
is focused on becoming as world power and the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing are part of their overall strategy to achieve this goal.
