To the Chinese, a solid education is tantamount to future economic success. Academics in China share a similarity with other Asian countries
with respect to the passion for learning. The social implications of such academic wisdom are, indeed, a major component why the students parents sought to offer a better life
through the American system of higher education. Education and culture are very closely linked in China. The goal in Asia today is to modernize, to progress like never
before; in order to accomplish this and keep it going for the long term, children must be given the best education possible. The students parents understood and fully supported
this notion, and have even foregone the "traditional subservient roles" (Barnathan et al 20) children have long adopted in Chinas "Confucian culture" (20). Su Songxing, director of the Institute
for Youth Research in Shanghai, recognizes the changing status of Chinese children, remarking that fathers now treat their children as friends, as well. "There is more democracy in the
family" (Barnathan et al 20). As such, the student has been given an opportunity to achieve higher education where others have not.
