nation in one direction or another. Two of the most important dynasties in Chinas history are the Qin or Chin dynasty and the Han dynasty. The following paper provides a general overview of these two dynasties. Background The Qin, or Chin dynasty was one that is noted for being the very first and most powerful dynasty for its ability to bring the many regions of China together under a whole. The individuals known as the Legalists maintained an authoritarian philosophy and they essentially overtook all of China through such philosophies. The first emperor was Shih Hwang-ti and he primarily maintained the power over the previously somewhat independent states of China (Fairbank; Goldman). Under this particular reign weights, measures, and the writing system of the Chinese was established. They were even the ones responsible for the creation or construction of the Great Wall. It was in this reign that the first Chinese empire was truly developed. It was also during this time that a great deal of past Chinese work was burned as it did not abide by the new rules and visions. It was known as the Burning of the Books decree. The Han dynasty overthrew the Qin dynasty and began to pay more attention to the people. It dynasty was more focused on Confucian ideals, ideals that were largely lost in the Burning of the Books, but which were replenished and sought out for their wisdom. In many ways this particular dynasty possessed a centralized government, like the Qin dynasty, but it also paid closer attention to the needs of the peasants, perhaps because of its Confucian ideals.
