of increasing international business endeavors. This is clearly the case in relationship to China as the United States, and other Western cultures, become more and more involved in business with
China in the world of business. The following paper presents a hypothetical situation, presented by the student requesting this paper, involving a Chinese individual in a business situation. The paper
examines causes for the results of the meeting. Chinese Custom in Business In this situation there is an American and a
Chinese that are working together in business. They are putting together a presentation for the American and Chinese corporate officers. The Chinese individual is soft spoken and yet also very
intelligent. The plan was for the Chinese individual to speak first but because he is soft spoken the American steps in to make the presentation because he feels that it
is important to get the points across. In essence the American takes over the entire presentation and the Chinese man simply remains silent unless he is asked a question directly.
After the presentation if over the Chinese individual is berated and scolded by the Chinese corporate officers. The question is why the Chinese individual was berated and why this is
something that is important in the Chinese culture. One of the most obvious problems in this scenario is that which involves the
American. The American simply assumed that because the Chinese man was soft spoken he would be of no use in the presentation. As an American there is obviously the presumptuous
notion that one must be aggressive and loud to get a point across. It was wrong of the American to take over and just assume that their approach in the
