to stop at a gas station to get directions. Of course, in older centuries, there were no gas stations to stop at and those who traveled by foot or by
boat would have to navigate the territory with much difficulty. That is why cartography was so important in the days before modernity. While the utility of maps is not contested,
the truth is that the history of cartography reveals that different peoples used maps for different reasons. Maps in the old days were not something one just stuffed in a
glove compartment. They were considered more important than mere replications of geographical representations. In early Asian times, maps were critical to the development of the peoples in the region and
contributed much to the world view and to map making in general. Editors Harley and Woodward, authors of a book on eastern cartography, explain the significance of these items people
have used through the ages: "maps are graphic representations that facilitate a spatial understanding of things, concepts, conditions, processes, or events in the human world" (qtd. in Hussey 304).
Harley explains that map making was Eurocentric in nature and that since, there has been a new vision of cartography (Harley 10). Today, insights gained from the study of
sources other than the traditional Western fare support the idea that map making practices can be extracted and applied to much of the world in totality (10). There has indeed
