Many of the fundamental differences between Chinese secular art and the traditional modern art of the West are based on differences between the philosophies of nature and human nature held by the two cultures. For the Chinese, human beings are not dominant I nature; they are part of it, responding like all living creatures to its rhythms. To be happy is to live in accord with nature; to be an artist is to be the instrument through which nature reveals itself.

Museum of Art has a permanent collection of Asian arts which includes the arts of China, Korea and a collection of ceramics from other part of the continent. Occupying ten recently renovated galleries, paintings, metalwork, lacquers, jades, and Buddhist art range from the Stone Age to the 20th century. Many of the fundamental differences between Chinese secular art and the traditional premodern art of the West are based on differences between the philosophies of nature and human nature held by the two cultures. For the Chinese, human beings are not dominant I nature; they are part of it, responding like all living creatures to its rhythms. To be happy is to live in accord with nature; to be an artist is to be the instrument through which nature reveals itself. Examples of the collection: I A lidded ritual or food cauldron decorated with interlaced dragons called a ding from the Zhou/Chou dynasty. Consider a bit of history before we look at this three-footed vessel: The Shang, which preceded the Zhou, was originally thought to be a mythic dynasty, yet in the last sixty years, it existence in Northern China has been authenticated. Relics found indicate their writing was essential pictorial, but did allow for the expression of abstract ideas. Warfare with neighboring areas was a way of life; and Shang cities were protected with earth packed walls. Royal tombs were extensive and live animals and servants often were entombed with the dead ruler. Decorations on Shang vessels were compact and tight, as though stamping the seal of power or magic on the vessel. The ding/cauldron (labeled as the Lidow ding after its benefactors) ...
