A DEMOCRACY? Since 1949, the unprecedented political institution of democracy was established as a means by which to overthrow Chinas historically oppressive Communist regime. While this political change was
somewhat modified through the subsequent years, it received a resurrection in 1976 with the decline and ultimate death of Mao Zedong. The idea of democracy, as our Chinas new
political presence intended it to represent, was that of the ultimate evolution of human life. The concept, which was just a seed when it was established in the United
States over two hundred years ago, allowed for people to make their own destinies - to follow whatever dreams they may have kept harbored deep inside for fear that they
would never be able to make them a reality. Democracy unleashed a joining together of the people so that new economic and political ideas could be shared in a
way they had not been before. Democracy truly had the ability to "empower" (Shanker, 1997, p. PG) both the people and the government, making them one and the same
entity under the democratic process. People no longer felt suppressed and unimportant in matters that affected their very lives, and the government welcomed the variegated input received on every
political issue. Indeed, democracy became a well-oiled machine that prospered for all parties involved. As such, political decisions - while not of a collective mind that one might
believe is indicative of a democratic government - are still made in the name of the people. Chinas progress throughout the twentieth century
