of the most important aspects of Chinas emergency onto the world stage will be the way it handles globalization; that will also impact the way the U.S. deals with it.
At the moment, the United States and China have a much closer tie than most people think, based, oddly enough, on the income disparity in both nations: China is
the second largest exporter of goods to the U.S. (Pfeffermann and Wasow, 2005). In order to reach this position, China has taken "two key decisions"; they have kept the
value of their currency low and their workers wages depressed as well (Pfeffermann and Wasow, 2005). They are able to keep these conditions in force by supplying inexpensive goods
to the United States; the result in China is a wealthy elite and a growing number of poor. The U.S. for its part needs the inexpensive Chinese goods so that
poor Americans will have something to purchase in order for them to continue their "buy in" to the Bush administrations policies that are clearly biased toward the rich. If
the low-end retailers like Wal-Mart are able to supply inexpensive goods, low income Americans will remain satisfied and uncritical of Administration policies (Pfeffermann and Wasow, 2005). This arrangement is
thus based on financial inequality but it suits the governments of both countries. Since it seems unlikely that the income disparity in either country will be addressed, no matter
which party is in power, it seems likely that the United States will want to continue its trade with China into the future. There are four other areas that are
