the world, after the U.S. and Germany (Reuvid, 2005). This, coupled with forecasts of its increasing growth, means that other nations will have to deal with China; it simply cannot
be ignored. Because of its increasing significance in the international trade arena, comparisons between the United States and China are valuable in understanding what drives a country towards economic
and political change. China in Recent Years For centuries, China was noted as one of the leading civilizations in the world, leading the world cultures in the development
of science, economics and artistry. Following the declining conditions in the country in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a shift towards renewed development after World War II
has improved the conditions for the country. The China that developed after the end of the War was one that focused on an autocratic socialist system, that supported the
sovereignty of China and applied a variety of controls on the daily life of millions of people (CIA World Factbook, 2007). The political and social controls put into
place under the leadership of Mao Zedong defined the structure of China today. In 1978, Mao Zedongs successor, Deng Xiaoping identified the need for a market-orientedeconomic system, one that
would change the way the outside world perceived China (CIA World Factbook, 2007). Demographic Information The population of China, as estimated in July of 2007, is approximately
