things. Many of those comparisons are derogatory yet at the same time amusing. A particularly interesting comparison can be made between American government and one mankinds distant relatives.
Those relatives, of course, are the simians. More specifically, chimpanzees make an excellent point of comparison for American government and its various nuances. Politics, after all, arise
when two or more individuals get together to combine power for the purpose of directing a group to achieve a specific purpose. For chimps this purpose may be the
acquisition of a more reliable food source. For humans, however, the purpose is sometimes often more complex. In "Chimpanzee Politics", author Frans
De Waal provides just the fuel that is needed to make comparisons between the politics of mankind and the politics of chimpanzees. De Waal provides insight on the rules
of morality (or lack of) that is inherent in chimpanzee relations with one another as well as insight on chimpanzee ambitions of power and the power structure that results.
Chimps are typically motivated by physical concerns where humans are often motivated by complex ideologies. Both groups, however, are motivated by the quest for power. For chimps that
quest is most often loud and apparent. For humans it is often more subtle and calculated. There is, as might be expected,
considerable controversy inherent in comparing chimpanzees and humans on practically any level. Even those that study the higher primates specifically have varied back and forth in regard to the
question of whether it is appropriate or not to compare these two very different species either on a biological level or on a cultural level. Never-the-less, chimpanzees are undeniably
