Less certain at some times than at others, the country has made a consistent and concerted effort to build a sustainable export-driven economy since the first days of NAFTA and continues to pursue ascension to it. in so much of South America, Chiles economy has been uncertain for decades. Less certain at some times than at others, the country has made a consistent and concerted
effort to build a sustainable export-driven economy since the first days of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The Clinton administration was
worried about South American double-digit inflation, and insisted that Chile bring its economy in line with more accepted ratios of national debt, increase in gross domestic product (GDP) and other
overall economic measures. Today, Chiles economy is well on its way to being reclassified as mature. The Lure of NAFTA
Chiles government and people could harbor ill will for the US with good cause based on economic matters. Though the Clinton administration kept
promising ascension to NAFTA if Chile would accomplish certain economic goals, the administration merely added new requirements each time Chile met the requirements that had been stated.
The government and Chilean business were eager to access the US market for the goods produced in Chile and under the protection of the principles of
free trade, but NAFTA membership remained elusive in the early- and mid-1990s (Economy weathering regional economic crisis well). Not to be outdone, Chile
finally bypassed the US market it craved, establishing solid trade relations with Canada instead. It was Chiles textile industry that first made semi-permanent inroads into the Canadian market; other
