Chile under his rule, with a discussion of his family as well. Chile During Pinochet In many ways it seems as
though the powerful rule of Pinochet began in 1973 when "Chile was in the midst of a social crisis as the elected Socialist president Salvador Allende lost control over his
own Popular Unity (UP) coalition, and violence erupted in the streets" (Londregan, 2006). It was at this point that Pinochet took control, although he apparently claimed that he was only
a temporary leader (Londregan, 2006). Despite that claim he was successful in eliminating any competition and as a result he remained the power in the nation for more than
16 years, which is longer than any other ruler has done in Chile (Londregan, 2006). Another author indicates that "For 17 years General Pinochet ruled over a police state" (The
Economist (US), 2006; 89US). He was a man who worked hard at gaining power and he apparently had many people who opposed
him killed (Londregan, 2006). It is noted that he was responsible for the murder of more than 3,000 citizens (Londregan, 2006). This does not include those he tortured
or sent out in exile from the country (Londregan, 2006). "Pinochet sought to transform Chilean society, and he incorporated a series of free-market economic reforms as a part of
his recipe for success" (Londregan, 2006). One author notes how, "A group of free-market economists gained his ear, preaching privatisation, trim budgets and
