although sometimes their fascination with electronics is troubling, it will not be a problem for most. Discussion In the 1980s, the "big thing" for children and young people - and
some adults - was video games. They were new then, and the computer itself was still just entering wide-spread use, so anything electronic seemed very exotic. Everyone it seems was
playing Pac Man, Tetris, Space Invaders and Donkey Kong. Other popular titles included Asteroids, Frogger and Zelda. Compared to todays incredibly detailed and realistic games, these were little more than
animated shooting galleries, but people loved them. Another development was the video arcade: people didnt stay home and play on their computers, since few people had them. Instead, they went
to video arcades where they could play all their favorite games. Entire families went to play the games together, enjoying themselves and "showing off" (if they were good enough) for
the spectators who gathered at the arcades. Today the arcades are gone. As technology improved and computers came into use throughout the world, the games got more sophisticated and
also, were designed for the home player. The community spirit of the arcade has been replaced by kids sitting at home, interacting via the Internet with other on-line players. The
single-player, individual experience has replaced the community. But todays children are different in other ways as well. The difference can be summed up in two words: "social networking." Todays kids
have never known a world without the Internet and without technology, and theyre extremely comfortable with it. (Its their parents who are scrambling to keep up.) They have become adept
at using the various networking forums to create their online profiles and they communicate constantly via these new media. They have created their own FaceBook pages, and leave messages -
