This 3 page paper reviews three research articles that look at issues concerning children’s health. The first looks at the clustering of fast food restaurants by schools, the second at the intake of fruit, vegetables, milk and sweetened beverages by children in middle school and the last at the levels of physical activities undertaken by 6th – 8th graders in their leisure time. was undertaken to assess if there is a clustering of fast food chain near to schools. If there is a higher level of fast food outlets by schools that in
other non down town areas this indicated an increased demand and supply of food to the areas around the schools. The article by Austin (et al, 2005) took place
in Chicago. The data collected was the locations of schools and the locations of fast food restaurants. The sources of the data were varied, the use of professional or market
research data was supplemented with more labour intensive research using sources such as the yellow pages to get a clear picture. Each restaurant was located on a map; both chain
restaurants and independents restaurants (Austin et al, 2005). Schools and restaurants were only included where there existence was verified (Austin et al, 2005). The results of these two independent
sets of data were then analysed statistically to assess the proximity of the restaurants to the schools with a variety of statistical tests. It was found that in the majority
of cases there was at least on fast food outlet within a 400 meter radius. Furthermore it was found that there was a significant clustering of fast food restaurants within
a 1.5 mile radius when compared to other non down town areas. The research established the clustering correlation but was not able to identify the causes of the clustering but
there was noted an increased level of clustering in higher income areas. Cullen (et al, 2004) also looks at the issue of nutrition and young people. This time the
