Boys are four times as likely to be autistic as girls, and the condition is usually noticed during the first three years of life (What is Autism, 2005). The cause is unknown but is believed to be rooted in abnormal brain structure or function (What is Autism, 2005). Autism causes children to sometimes act in ways that seem to be out of place because their responses to the world around them are very different from those of other children (What is Autism, 3005). Autistic children will laugh, cry, or throw temper tantrums at strange times, have problems dealing with other people, and resist touching or making eye contact (What is Autism, 2005). This presents many challenges for teachers of autistic children, but many researchers believe that teaching communication skills can help with social and learning development. Approximately one-half of people suffering from autism have not learned proper speech (Pelios and Sucharzewski, 2003). For those who do, their way of communicating with others is quite limited (Pelios and Sucharzewski, 2003). Scientists have learned that it is necessary to first expand some basic skills in autistic children before communication can be attempted (Pelios and Sucharzewski, 2003). Classes for learning how to mimic actions, matching like objects, pointing, and making out sounds, known as non-verbal imitation (NVI) can aid in increasing skills (Pelios and Sucharzewski, 2003). Learning how to use different objects and telling them apart will allow autistic children to perform simple tasks such as selection and labeling (Pelios and Sucharzewski, 2003).
