more sophisticated and little girls dress up as adults and even wear makeup as they appear on the runways of America. Beauty pageants in fact had become more and
more common at the end of the twentieth century, particularly in the U.S. (Sherrow, 2001). Thousands of these types of contests are held and they are done at the local,
regional and national levels (Sherrow, 2001). More common in the Southern part of the United States, they are held for all types of children from babies to toddlers and they
are even held for boys (Sherrow, 2001). This is essentially a business. Money is made not only by pageant organizations but also by their sponsors who glean business from the
event (Sherrow, 2001). The people who pay are the entrants and their families, a hobby that can become quite costly. Children are provided with expensive clothing, makeup and attention
to hair that is far beyond what even an ordinary female teenager would want. Aside from the expense and the likely spoiling that goes with the contests, another criticism is
that it is fodder for pedophiles. Pedophiles are sexually aroused by children. With so many contests where children are sexualized, it is no wonder that pedophiles are able to glean
more material from these events. It is not known who killed Jon Benet Ramsey, for example, but some speculate that it could have been a sex offender in the neighborhood.
