the world of deaf people. There are hints and glimpses of such a perspective throughout the movie, but it seems that the final point always remains illusive as the film
is aimed at people who hear, not people who live in the world of deafness. In the following paper we examine the film. Children of a Lesser God
Roger Ebert comments that "If a story is about the battle of two people over the common ground on which they will communicate, its not fair to make the whole
movie on the terms of only one of them." In essence, the entire movie is centered around the character played by William Hurt. It is directed towards presenting his opinions
and his point of view, and leaving the young deaf woman as something of a helpless individual whose opinions always clash with his. This is incredibly apparent when we
note that we are never given subtitles to understand what the deaf girl is saying, but are always presented with the narration of Hurt as he repeats what she has
said: "Marlee Matlin, who plays the deaf woman, signs all of her dialogue, and William Hurt, who plays the teacher, then repeats it aloud, as if to himself. I like
to hear the sound of my own voice, he says at one point, and indeed he does such a smooth and natural job of translation that the strategy works" (Ebert).
The story is actually a love story where Hurt is determined to have her become more proficient at communicating with the hearing world. But, she does not see this
and feels that her world is equally as special and that he should respect that. The film never accepts that and we are constantly presented with Hurts feelings to the
