or lesbian couple marry, that they would want to have children. After all, in every other way, people of the same sex who commit to one another are just like any other couple. They want to share a home, a life and have children. In fact, gay families are on the rise. Researchers estimate that the total number of children in the United States, who reside with at least one gay parent, ranges from 6 to 14 million ("ACLU," 1999, p.PG). Yet, there is controversy. The gay lifestyle is not accepted by society in total. To an extent, this is changing. However, while liberal schools systems try to sneak in tolerance regarding homosexuality, the religious protest. Having sexual relations with someone of the same gender is considered a sin to most Christians. Therefore, the union is not accepted by the majority and gay families are ostracized by many communities. While some people believe that everyone is entitled to do as they please, and believe that homosexuality is okay and what others do is their own business, when children are involved many take a different tact. In other words, what couples do behind closed doors may be their business, but when children are born, it is everybodys business. Children are in fact protected by the society--by social services, by nosy neighbors, by teachers-so it stands to reason that society should also be concerned about children emanating from a homosexual union. Although two men cannot have children, or two women, gay families come about through adoption, surrogate mothering or sperm donation. Society therefore must be concerned with the outcome. Are these children raised in a dysfunctional environment? Should gay or lesbian couples be discouraged from raising children because they are homosexual? Are the children really harmed?
