back to times when they believed that childhood was more innocent, purer, and essentially a time when the society was far better for children than today. The truth, however, is
that there has never been a perfect or purer time in history as it relates to the condition or welfare of children. The following paper looks at conditions for children
around the year 1900, illustrating how children are likely far better off today than they were over a hundred years ago. Worse Off Today Than in 1900? As mentioned,
children today often seem to be lost in a world of divorce, a world where both parents work and quality time is a thing of the past, a world where
technology consumes them and keeps them occupied, and a world where hope seems far away. They appear to be a lost generation of children whose future is uncertain, and whose
education is lost in a pile of paperwork and economic concern. We see children bringing guns to school and killing teachers and classmates, and we fight hard to help children
stay away from drugs while they are young. In essence, we worry for our children and think that our present society is no longer one that sees children as wonderfully
innocent creatures who need nurturing. All of these arguments are real, and quite true. But, at the same time, "There has never been a golden age of happy, safe and
