of the world when it comes to the health and welfare of children. We argue that certain policies and even warfare are essentially designed to protect the children who are
the future. But, in reality the United States is not necessarily a very enlightened nation when it comes to children, any children. For example, we claim that we drop food
supplies to families and children in need when warfare breaks out, yet we allow many children in the United States to starve due to the economic conditions at home. We
claim that we support, financially, many countries who need food for children while we deny adequate health care for our children at home. According to the student requesting this
particular paper, Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General, once said: "A world fit for children is a just and peaceful world. It is one in which all children are given the
love, care and nurturing they need to make a good start in life , where the can complete a basic education of good quality and in adolescence, can develop their
potential in a safe and supportive environment that will help them become caring and contributing citizens. This is the kind of world children deserve - and the one that we
as adults have an irrefutable obligation to create." Annan "has accused adults worldwide of failing children, forcing far too many to grow up in poverty or threatened by war" (BBC
News, 2002). These are very powerful, and very enlightened statements, that focus on what we think we may be fighting towards, but which, in fact, we often seem incredibly removed
