that due to a strong economy, we are doing just fine. The statistics label that "wishful thinking," as we recognize that child poverty, according to Lichter (1997) is at
a thirty year high. We may shake our heads, and look at the numbers, wondering how that can be, yet the gap between rich children and poor children is widening
rather than decreasing. It might be easy to say that the initial research was not done correctly, or the changing nature of poverty distorts the true figures, but as
some point that is the "wordiness" of the issue. The reality is that we are not doing well by a great portion of our children. Concentrated poverty According to
the Institute on Race and Poverty (2000), an area of "concentrated poverty" occurs when forty percent or more of the population of a given area, live at, or below, the
government determined poverty line. This is generally happening in the residential sections of what is labeled the" core of the city," or those older suburban neighborhoods that may
