component of it that we know as the World Wide Web, are among the most influential factors of modern life. This influence is exerted not just on adults but on children as well. Children, in fact, do not remember life without the Internet. It is an ever-present element of their lives. This, of course, introduces a number of considerations regarding the nature of the Webs influence on those that have not yet attained the maturity needed to always direct their experiences towards what is good about the Internet and away from the bad aspects of the Internet. When considering the interests of children the World Wide Web can be perceived either as an untamed monster with immeasurable threat or as an indispensable ally. The Web does, in fact hold certain threats to children. At the same time, however, its value in education and entertainment cannot be forgotten. It is important to remember that the key to determining how the Web will influence a child lies not with the Web or even the child. That key is firmly held by the adults responsible for supervising a childs use of the Web. In many ways the Internet might be considered a sociological experiment. While most adults are more than willing to participate in that experiment, however, few responsible adults would be willing to sacrifice children as a part of it. In actuality, there is no need for sacrifice when it comes to either the Internet or the World Wide Web. There is, however, a very real need for adult vigilance when it comes to children using this electronic medium. ...
