As Bell et al state, it is generally assumed that delusions are self evident, in that they embody a belief which the majority of people would class as pathological. However, when one comes to consider bizarre and non-bizarre delusions, it is apparent that there is a considerable "grey area" as regards the probability of particular delusory beliefs being true. The DSM-IV definition asserts that a delusion is a form of belief whose acceptance, and consequent behaviour based on such a belief, constitutes insanity. Delusions are assumed to be false, and to result from incorrect inferences regarding external reality; in addition, they are significantly different from beliefs held by others based on the same external reality. Bell et al also point out that one can distinguish between bizarre and non-bizarre delusions; the latter are improbable rather than impossible. A non-bizarre delusion would involve situations that might conceivably occur, but are considered to be highly unlikely, whereas a bizarre delusion is one that the rest of society regards as entirely impossible. Non-bizarre beliefs, because of the fact that they deal with issues and situations which have been known to take place, can be difficult to conclusively establish as false. The individual may be convinced that they are being poisoned, conspired against, or that a partner is unfaithful; since these are all situations which, however unlikely, are not un-heard of, the therapist has to make value judgements regarding ...
