the unhealthy, fat-laden meals served by fast food restaurants and the epidemic of obesity in the U.S. However, common sense has to be backed up by research. This paper examines
the latest findings to see if there is a measurable connection between the fast food industry and obesity in children and adolescents. Discussion We begin with a study done by
Bowman, et al., to determine the effect of fast food on childrens energy levels and diet quality at a national level. These authors note that although everyone is aware of
the fact that fast food is a mainstay of the diet of most U.S. children, there have been few studies that looked at how fast food affects health and nutrition
in this population segment (Bowman, Gortmaker, Ebbeling, Pereira & Ludwig, 2004). This study was designed "to test the hypothesis that fast-food consumption adversely affects dietary factors linked to obesity risk"
(Bowman et al., 2004, p. 112). The study headed by Bowman appears to be an examination of the information gathered in two earlier studies: the 6212 adolescents and children, ages
4 to 19, who participated in the "Continuing Survey of Food Intake by Individuals conducted from 1994 to 1996 and the Supplemental Childrens Survey conducted in 1998" (Bowman et al.,
