mental illness in children. Discussion The first article is by Dr. J. M. Stolzer, who states flatly that ADHD diagnoses have now "reached epidemic proportions in the United States" (2007,
p. 109). Stolzer notes something that a great many people have mentioned, namely, that some of the behaviors now considered signs of mental illness were once thought to be nothing
more than "bratty" behavior. Inability to pay attention, interrupting, jumping up from their seats-all these used to be indicative of nothing more than either high energy or rudeness, or possibly
both; now they are found to be symptoms of "mental illness" (Stolzer, 2007). Stolzer suggests that these behaviors, which were once considered normal childhood antics, are now being labeled as
mental illnesses by "those with a vested interest in promoting the widespread use of psychotropic drugs in child and adolescent populations" (Stolzer, 2007, p. 109). Stolzer notes that ADHD is
the "most commonly diagnosed mental illness in children in the United States today" (2007, p. 109). The treatment of choice for almost all of these "mentally ill" children (nearly 99%)
is methylphenidate, which they take daily (Stolzer, 2007). Stolzer has written his article to openly challenge "the scientific validity and reliability of current ADHD assessment tools"; he also questions how
ethical it is to give "dangerous and addictive drugs to children" (Stolzer, 2007, p. 109). Stolzer argues that in 1950s America, ADHD didnt exist; in the 1970s, when it began
to be diagnosed, it was corrected with behavior modification techniques; now, it is claimed that 10-15% of all children have it (Stolzer, 2007). Stolzer wants to know why "80%-90% of
