In order to consider the problem of child abuse in contemporary society, especially as it relates to the family structure, it is useful to look at the way that
child abuse is defined, some of the possible causes, and the ways in which society deals with the issue in terms of legal intervention, education, and the role of social
services. McGehee (2002) makes the point that child abuse as we understand the term does
not occur in traditional societies, although this does not imply that children are not badly treated in such communities. It is more to the point that children are treated in
the same way by all adults within the group, and that such treatment has been agreed by the group as a whole. Child abuse is therefore defined as treating a
child in a way which does not conform to the norms of the society. McGehee
notes that this situation arises because the community shares the same cultural values and traditions, and any deviation from these communal norms is quickly identified and dealt with. Even though
the way that children are treated within the group may not be the same as the way children are treated in other communities, these patterns of behaviour have been defined
by the groups cultural development and are considered by all to be what is best for the child.
