about the sexual abuse scandals in the Catholic church and with the new Pope in the news, talk shows have focused on this very issue. They ask, why are priests
villainized more often than those who are not affiliated with the church? There is a question as to whether or not the media is being fair to the church. Perhaps
they hold Priests to a much higher standard than the average individual, and they should. Still, sexual relations between a child and an adult is always wrong. It is always
harmful and is not something that is a church-related phenomenon. First, it pays to explore child sexual abuse. The reason why sexual relations between children and adults is always harmful
is because it is something for which society sees as a taboo. It is true that the problem is a social construction. The taboo against incest for example seems to
be something that arose simply due to the fact that offspring from such unions would ruin the genetic pool. Many questions do surface about these taboos and conventions. While socially
constructed, that is not to say it should not be treated as a real barrier. It is socially and morally unacceptable for these things to occur. Interestingly, many stories--not
involving Priests-- that surface on the news are the ones of horrific tales of torture and murder. The little girl in Florida who was buried alive by a pedophile is
a case in point. Clearly, the perpetrator did not want an ongoing sexual relationship with his young victim. This sexual deviant is far different from the Mary Kay Letourneaus of
the world who simply wanted an untoward relationship with a student. In Letourneaus situation, she would end up starting a new family with her victim. Other cases of teacher and
