in five settings: during math class in the morning, during lunch time recess, during language arts class, on a neighborhood playground, and in church. In each setting, the child was
wearing what would be considered appropriate clothing. She wore clean jeans and a girls top in school, nice pants and top at church, and jeans and T-shirts on the neighborhood
playground. When math lessons began, the teacher started with a mini-lecture reminding students of what they had learned the day before. It was a lesson on fractions. The teachers
intention was to clarify any confusions and of the children may have. The lesson was also intended to offer more practice. Angela paid attention during the teachers comments but when
it was time to do practice problems on a worksheet, she seemed confused. She looked over to her neighbor to see what he was doing. The teacher was circulating around
the classroom and noticed that Angela seemed lost and went directly to her. Angela did not know what to do but she had not asked any questions when the teacher
invited questions during her discussion. It seemed that the child was embarrassed and then, frustrated. This conclusion is drawn because while the teacher was talking with her, the observer could
hear Angela raise her voice and say, "I just cant do this!" The teacher remained calm and continued her private tutoring until Angela was working on the practice problems by
herself. Language arts was a different experience for Angela. She is ahead of most of her class. This was demonstrated during her reading aloud time and by the fact
that she helped others in her group with the comprehension questions. Nothing remarkable happened during lunch recess. Angela played four-square with three other children for about 10 minutes. She
