Children are inarguably the most innocent of any crime victim. There
is no excuse for child molestation in particular. Not surprisingly, child molestation is a high-profile crime and one where the media rallies to depict every gory detail of the
molestation and the trial and sentencing of the molester. Police and prosecutors alike spare no effort to insure punishment is levied. History has demonstrated, however, that what can
sometimes result is a witch hunt in which innocent people are accused, convicted, and imprisoned. Such was the case with Robert Kelly Jr., then owner and operator of the
Little Rascals Day Care Center in Edenton North Carolina. The implications of the charges levied in the "Little Rascals" case are indeed
overwhelming. In all some twenty adults would be accused of taking part in a complex child abuse ring and enacting some four hundred counts of sexual molestation of a
minor. Of this number, however, only seven individuals would actually be charged. Their accusers ranged from children who could barely speak to adolescents.
In 1992, after a trial that lasted the better part of a year, Robert Kelly Jr. convicted on 99 counts of sexually abuse of twelve children.
