of the tragic stories would end in death (Smith, 1995). One example is of a twelve year old boy who was using a hay mower but his attention was diverted
for a moment; what happened was that his shirt got tangled and somehow would be pulled off his feet from under the blades (1995). No one heard his screams as
the machine made too much noise and he was killed (1995). Of course, what had happened was probably illegal. There are laws on the books to protect children from farm
machinery. While that is the case, laws vary from state to state and for farm rules, there is a great deal of variation. For example, one can work their own
farm if their parents own one and so are not bound by the traditional rules. However, most people are acquainted with child labor laws that are enforced. Many people are

(1995). However, what is noted is that the "hazardous orders provisions of child labor laws " where children under 18 are not allowed to work, are often disregarded (1995).
Some claim that things have been getting worse in recent years and child labor violation have increased since 1980 (1995). This trend is prevalent throughout the United States (1995).
