In recent years, child abductions have become somewhat more frequent than ever before and people are keeping closer eyes on their little ones when they go out to play. Sexual abuse, too, has become more and more frequent, or at least it is publicized now. Parents screen the families of homes their children may sleep at, lest there might be danger lurking behind closed doors. Signs of sexual abuse are looked for by parents, teachers and doctors. Everyone knows these signs in America. These same mothers see the faces of poverty on their television screens, as Sally Struthers asks for just about a dollar a day to feed these starving little ones. But little Johnny or little Susie gets off of the bus, and in their nicely pressed jeans and L.L. Bean coat come running safely to the door as the bus driver waits with red lights blaring. The children have arrived home safely and the button on the 32" television monitor is shut off. Millions of television pleas are tuned out or ignored. Boycotts by groups protesting against child labor in other countries are all too often shoved aside in favor of getting a good deal on a pair of chinos and the problems of third world nations persist. The feeling of relief that mother experienced when her child arrived home safely from school is not experienced by any mother in the Philippines as her children may be miles away working off a family debt.
