Increasingly, countries like the United States have sought to address the issue of child labor when entering into trade partnerships with countries where child labor drives industry. Developing more ethical solutions to labor issues in these countries has been recognized as a plausible, but costly, change. Child Labor Child labor can be defined as the use of children under the age of 15 in labor industries. Most industries in countries where child labor is allowed practice exploitive child labor, where the nations most vulnerable children, those living in poverty, are brought into unsafe work conditions to labor for minimal wages (Solis, 2009). Child labor often results in the lack of education that perpetuates poverty and creates a kind of cyclical process, whereby children of poor families are never able to move out of poverty (Solis, 2009). Child labor is common in countries in Latin America, Asian and Africa. Child laborers can range in age from the very young to children in their teen years. For example, the bulk of child laborers in Asia are between 10 and 14 years old (Ray 2004). These children are sent by their parents to help earn money for food and other basic needs. These children work long, hard hours in dangerous conditions for very little pay, and help to move industries forward by creating low-cost products.
