what fire is, how it feels, or what it does. Other children may have serious mental problems, aggressive problems, wherein they are acting out because of anger or frustration. And,
still others may just merely have a psychological problem that is related to the thrill of fire itself. The following paper examines some of the behavioral characteristics of children who
like to start fires. Child Firestarters One author tells us that, "Children start fires for many reasons - the most common is curiosity or experimentation. However, once
children begin to set fires, they typically will not stop on their own without intervention" (City of Mount Vernon, 2004). Many may start a fire by merely being curious about
what will happen when something burns. This is considered to be the largest group of child firestarters. There are those, however, who have serious psychological problems related to starting
fires. For example, according to the author cited previously, "The second and smaller group of juveniles who set fires is motivated by psychological reasons such as an inability to express
emotion, Wishert said. Some of these kids have trouble grasping the severity of their actions" (City of Mount Vernon, 2004). Another author clearly defines several types of children who start
fires. There is, as mentioned, those who start fires out of curiosity, or through accidents. Aside from these types there are those that have very serious problems. One type is
