in day care setting When I visited day care there were only eight children in attendance between the ages of three and four. One child told me that I
was too big to be there because the small furniture was too little for me. It reminded me of Piaget who said that children see things differently, or from
their own perspective. Large, colored Styrofoam blocks seemed to be the toys of choice for the moment as they were easy to stack, knock down and pick up again.
One child (boy) appeared sleepy and did not want to play with the blocks, but laid close enough to the others that he could reach out and kick over
the blocks with his foot. The children seemed well aware that when the bocks fell that they would not hurt anyone, I wondered how they would have played with
them, if old fashioned wooden blocks the same size were mixed in with the light-weight ones. It also occurred to me that the boy sucking his thumb, as comfort,
might be as close to the Freudian child-development, based, sexual theory that I would see. I thought he might like to lie down in my lap, but when I
got closer to him, he kicked at me in the same way that he had kicked at the blocks. As for including Ericksons theories of child development in my observations,
it occurred to me that it did not take the children long to ignore me. I felt that I was the new element in their environment; they considered me;
saw I was not going to do much, other than hold one of the dolls; and adapted to my presence quickly, and went on with their own play.
