over the course of the first two years of life demonstrates the complex ways in which these areas overlap. Cognitive development refers to how an individual "perceives, thinks, and
gains understanding of his or her world" (Wells). At one time it was felt that cognitive ability in infants was lacking and that cognition did not develop until babies began
to develop language (Wells). Today, however, it is known that babies are very aware of their surroundings and interested in their environments form birth. Infants "gather, sort and process information"
as they develop their abilities of perception and their thinking skills (Wells). The social and emotional domain refers to the "process of acquiring the skills to recognize and manage
emotions," within the context of "positive relationships" (NCMH). This area of development also begins during infancy as babies learn to establish bonds of love and trust with their caregivers. The
ways in which parents (or siblings) "cuddle, hold and play" with babies sets the foundational learning for this domain. The physical domain, of course, refers to the developmental milestones that
occur during the first two years of life, a babies learn to hold up their heads, roll over, control their hands, scoot, craw and walk. As this suggests, developmental milestone
follow a logical progression. Babies learn to coo, imitate sounds, babble, form their first words, and then their first sentences. Infants (0 to 1) : All of these areas
of development are integrally related. For example, As a baby is cuddled, fed, sung to and rocked, the infant begins the processes of both social and cognitive development. The baby
studies the parents face, makes eye contact and begins the process of relating to other people. Simultaneously, this attention encourages the baby to develop cognition via the encouragement received. For
