the problems of running a day-care center, or of teaching small children, is that germs and diseases can pass through the student population like wildfire. This in large part is due to the fact that young children simply dont understand hygiene, either what it is or why its necessary. The syllabus suggests that the caregiver should encourage children "to take responsibility for their own personal hygiene" by promoting proper hygiene practices and planning appropriate activities. Examples of this include "using food preparation experiences to reinforce the importance of hand washing before preparing and eating food"; encouraging youngsters to take responsibility for their own cleanliness; and using songs to encourage very young children to wash their hands. This exercise asks the caregiver to find and discuss three other caregiving strategies with regard to hygiene. There are numerous web sites available that make learning about hygiene a game for children; one can be found here: http://archive.food.gov.uk/hea/index2.html. Its called "Food Hygiene Mission Control" and has a number of screens that are age appropriate and give children solid information about hygiene. Its not interactive, but children seem to enjoy working with computers and this is one way to let them teach themselves while pursuing an activity they enjoy. Caregivers might also use childrens books written about hygiene as teaching tools; there are many books devoted to the subject, with a particular emphasis on hand washing. Titles include Those Man Nasty Dirty Downright Disgusting ... But Invisible Germs by Judith Anne Rice; Germs Make Me Sick by Melvin Berger; and Buddy Bears Handwashing Troubles by Marjorie T.
