Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell we have tales that speak of murder and the condition of mankind. They are, in many ways, very different tales, yet they also possess similar elements that illustrate how man is nothing more than an animal in his inherent state. Bearing these realities, and the possibilities, in mind we present the following paper which first discusses "Child By Tiger" and then "The Most Dangerous Game." The paper finishes with a comparison and contrast of the two. Child By Tiger The most significant aspects of this story involve Dick Prosser as a simple and somewhat caring man. He is a man who lives simply: "The bare board floor was always cleanly swept, a plain bare table and a plain straight chair were stationed exactly in the center of the room" (Wolfe NA). But, at the same time, while he is a man of caring as it involves mankind, he is a man who is fed up with the world around him. He is somewhat disgusted with the condition of man and while he is successful at keeping this submersed he eventually comes to a point where his inherent nature, the nature of man, cannot be avoided. One night Dick Prosser finds himself in an accident with a drunk man. It is the drunks fault that the cars collided but the drunk man is belligerent and begins to hit Dick. Dick essentially loses all control and all that is inherently natural takes over, with the civilized man clearly taking a back seat: "But suddenly the whites of his eyes were shot with red, his bleeding lips bared for a moment over the white ivory of his teeth" (Wolfe NA). In this we see that the inherent nature of man is that of the predator. ...
