one called authorities. What would be learned eventually, when a neighbor became quite concerned and did pick up the phone, was that the situation next door was dismal. What
was found at a Collingswood, New Jersey residence that took in many foster children was that four adopted boys, one of whom was 19 years old, each weighed less than
50 pounds (Bell, 2003). Their adoptive parents were arrested on aggravated assault and child endangerment charges (2003). Of course, if they really did have eating disorders, one would expect these
boys to be seeing medical specialists. After all, one would imagine that they would qualify for free medical care anyway, but the couple chose to use the government money for
their own whims. The entire family existed on the foster care money and it is theorized that there simply was not enough food to go around. One neighbor saw one
of the boys eating from a trash can, which is when police were called. This is simply one of many shocking stories that have made headlines. Child abuse is rampant
in America from stories about people forgetting to remove their babies form car seats, something that can cause death from heat stroke, to mothers drowning their own children for convenience.
Society must care for its children. There is a need for the government to step in on occasion, even when the right of the parent should logically supersede
government dictates. Although it is true that DYFS workers are sometimes called by angry children who want to get back at their parents, or neighbors who disagree with parenting practices,
