In some instances, the other parent turns a blind eye to the ongoing abuse, particularly when it is of a sexual nature, convincing themselves the abuse is not happening
as long as they do not see it or try to confront the abuser. Children who experience sexual abuse are stripped of a
fundamental attachment critically necessary for healthy emotional and psychological development. Crawford et al (2004) note how the ongoing emotional impact this makes as the child endures the sexual abuse
transforms into any number of psychological illnesses - not the least of which includes borderline personality disorder (BPD) - that leaves the individual incapable of maintaining interpersonal relationships or upholding
a positive self-image. As the child grows into adulthood, he or she segues into impulsivity that typically leads to self-destructive tendencies. Inasmuch as borderline personality disorder causes the
individual to search for some type of protective, nurturing relationship the victim feels will make up for what the sexual abuse compromised during the formative years, this search most often
leads to a superficial fix time and time again due to the individuals volatile, unpredictable behavior and - as a direct result - difficulty in sustaining healthy relationships. Instrumental
to this is how "the ability of individuals to make a commitment to lasting relationships in adulthood depends on their earlier ability to achieve a secure identity and sense of
