childhood. Far too many suffer at the hands of a parent or other adult on a regular basis. Child abuse is, in fact, one of the most disturbing
issues of our time. It is not an issue that is always dealt with in a predictable manner, however, by the agencies and individuals that have been charged with
protecting our nations most valuable resource, our children. The intent of this paper is to analyze this problem and to present the argument that although parents should be given
an opportunity to correct their wrongs towards their children, there is a limit to how far that opportunity should extend. It could be contended, in fact, that a parent
that has been proven to have committed child abuse on multiple occasions should have their privileges as a parent taken away on the third instance of proven abuse.
Child abuse can take the form or either an act of commission or omission (Nester, 1998). It can take the form of physical abuse,
emotional abuse, sexual abuse, or neglect (Nester, 1998). Neglect can take the form of either gross neglect or medical neglect. A nonorganic failure to thrive can also be
an indication of child abuse. Child abuse can entail actual physical harm in which a child sustains physical damage and emotional harm in which the charge is endangered psychologically.
This harm can be either actually occurring or considered potential given the circumstances of the family. The statistics concerning child
abuse are astounding. In 1995 an estimated 54% of all child abuse cases were attributed to physical neglect with 25% to physical abuse, 11% to sexual abuse, and
