factors in child abuse are not only diverse, they are difficult to resolve. Even with well-intentioned and designed programs and policies, child abuse continues to raise its ugly head
not just in American society but in societies around the world. The impacts are many. Children that are abused are not only physically impacted, they are psychologically impacted.
here appear to be certain correlations between a childs propensity to be the victim of abuse and various socioeconomic factors.
Whatever the causes, however, the impacts are significant. Child abuse can result from a diversity of stressors ranging from economics, to criminal activity, to substance abuse (NSW Child Death
Review Team 2003; Tomison 2002). These stressors impact the family not only directly but indirectly through their connection with domestic abuse. What is incontestable is that, too often,
the impacts of child abuse stay with a child for the rest of their lives. Child abuse has come into public
consciousness since about the 1960s. As a consequence of this increased awareness, numerous laws have been passed requiring public officials such as Community Health personnel and teachers to report
suspected abuse. Children continue to be abused and to suffer the impacts of that abuse even in the face of key legislation like the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment
Act (CAPTA) (P.L. 93-247), a law that has been strategically amended several times since its inception in 1974. Policies are in place, as
