his gifts as a communicator enabled him to move easily in two very different worlds. Billy Weatherford frequently exercised his diplomatic prowess in a determined effort to keep the
peace between white settlers and the native groups in the American South. However, he would not hesitate to flex his considerable muscles or demonstrate his masterful horsemanship in times
of war. To Americans, he was a reviled villain; to the Creek Muskogees, he was a beloved hero. William Weatherford hailed from a distinguished family background on both
sides. His mother Sehoy III was the daughter of a respected Tabacha Chief, and after the death of her first husband John Tate, she married an old family friend,
redheaded Scottish trader Charles Weatherford.2 Out of this union came a son William, born in either 1780 or 1781, depending upon which historical account one chooses to believe.
It is believed William Weatherford was born on the west bank of the Alabama River in an Upper Creek homestead known as Coosauda.3 Charles Weatherford has established a successful
river bluff trading post, but his passion was breeding and training horses. Young Billy shared his love of horses with his father, and horses would always figure prominently in
his life. There are some scholars who have expressed surprise that Billy Weatherford (who was in reality less than 50 percent Creek), who with his light complexion and Anglo
