Perce had been taken to their knees by the U.S. government. Not only were the circumstances leading up to this time in history lengthy and complex, so too was
Chief Josephs reaction to those circumstances. Under Chief Josephs leadership the Nez Perce made a phenomenal 1500 mile journey across what was
considered impassable terrain. Unfortunately, Chief Joseph and his people were ultimately forced to surrender. Their fight had been long and diligent, however, and it is a fight that
is still remembered to this day. Chief Joseph impacted Americans from all walks of life. Even his greatest adversary, General Nelson Miles who ultimately befriended Chief Joseph, had
great respect for him. After Chief Josephs ultimate surrender Miles described him as: "The
boldest and best marksman of any Indians I have ever encountered . . . a man of more sagacity and intelligence than any Indian I have ever met" (Hook, 1991,
99). Chief Josephs and his people fortitude, intelligence, and diligence undoubtedly extend well
back into history. Some of the first records that we have of the Nez Perce after the establishment of the United States are those concerning the infamous Lewis and
